Strengthen Your Arches

Aruna, Foot Care

When we think about what sets humans apart from other animals, the hand often comes to mind. Its versatility is incredible — from gripping heavy tools to handling delicate instruments.

But many believe that it’s the foot that truly defines us as human.

In Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis writes: “…it was only by learning to walk upright that we freed our brains, and our hands, to manipulate abstract concepts and the raw materials of the world.”

The real marvel of our feet is the arches. There are three in total: two running along the length of the foot and one spanning its width.

Without these arches, our feet wouldn’t be able to support our weight. Together, they form a triangular base of support, as you can see in the space between them (refer to the image above).

Try this

We could talk endlessly about the arches — from the intricate structure of the bones that form them to what true arch support really means — but that’s a conversation for another time. For now, let’s try a simple exercise to help you become familiar with your foot’s triangle and give your hardworking feet some relaxation:

  1. Get a tennis ball and sit comfortably near the edge of a chair.
  2. Place the ball under one foot and roll it from your heel to the ball of your foot a few times.
  3. Then, roll the ball in small circles where your arch is most prominent. Gradually move towards the ball of your foot, and then back toward the heel. Try to cover the triangle of your foot as you roll.

Practice this for a few days, and add a few minutes of barefoot walking to your routine. Pay attention to how your gait and balance improve.

This is just one small step toward better foot health. In my class series on the feet, the lessons explore even more ways to keep our feet strong and pain-free.
