Hidden by Habit

Years ago, when I started paying attention to how I carry myself , I was surprised to discover how tense my left hand was—all the time.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
I soon realized that the tension extended to my left shoulder and the left side of my neck as well.
What Was Causing This Tension?
Was it something small, like the way I always carried my handbag on my left shoulder, subtly lifting it to keep it from slipping?
Or could it have been an old injury from my early twenties when I used to practice karate?
Honestly, it didn’t matter where it came from.
What mattered was that I hadn’t even noticed it before. These patterns of tension were hidden from me by my habits—camouflaged by the way I moved and went about my daily life.
Why This Awareness Matters
Unnecessary muscular tension, even if subtle, can take a toll on the body over time.
At first, it might show up as small, recurring aches and pains that no amount of stretching or rest seems to solve.
Left unaddressed, it can sometimes lead to more serious issues, like repetitive strain injuries.
The good news is, the first step to breaking this cycle is simple: pay attention!
When we become aware of how we move and use our bodies throughout the day, we can start uncovering the hidden patterns that might be holding us back—patterns hiding in plain sight.
Take a moment today to notice: is there a part of your body quietly working overtime without you realizing it?
