Think of something you’ve done thousands of times but still aren’t much better at, next to something you picked up quickly with far less repetition.
What was actually different between the two?
If your honest answer is “I don’t know, I just did one of them more,” neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene’s How We Learn has a more precise answer, and it’s a genuinely useful one.
Dehaene’s central claim is that learning is not passive absorption. Your brain doesn’t soak up experience the way a sponge soaks up water, no matter how many times you repeat something.
Instead, learning happens through active work: making a prediction, testing it against what actually happens, noticing exactly where it was wrong, and reorganizing based on that error.
Repetition without any of that noticing tends to just groove in whatever you were already doing, including the parts that weren’t working.
He narrows this down to four ingredients that make learning actually stick:
- Attention – You have to be tracking the thing, not running on autopilot.
- Active engagement – Trying and testing, not just watching or repeating.
- Error correction – Noticing when and how a prediction was wrong, and
- Consolidation – Especially sleep, which is when a surprising amount of the real reorganizing happens.
If you’ve ever taken a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement class, this list should sound oddly familiar, even if you’ve never heard it phrased in scientific terms.
A good lesson doesn’t ask you to repeat a “correct” movement over and over. It asks you to notice small differences between one variation and another, to sense what changes, to try something slightly different and feel what that does.
That’s not a stylistic choice. It turns out to be close to a checklist of exactly the conditions Dehaene identifies as what makes learning work at all.
There’s also a more surprising thread in the book, worth knowing about honestly rather than glossing over: Dehaene shows that infants aren’t quite the blank slates many earlier thinkers, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais included, assumed.
Even very young babies arrive with real built-in structure — early abilities to track patterns, distinguish speech sounds, sense rough quantities, and orient toward faces.
Experience still does enormous work. It just isn’t starting from nothing.

And Dehaene shows how those maps keep changing, through attention, activity, error, and rest, rather than force or repetition.
Four different scientists, four different specialties, four books — and one continuous thread that a movement teacher named Moshe Feldenkrais was already describing on a studio floor, long before anyone could watch any of it happen on a brain scan.
